Hands on math. The shape of things and more, less or the same

Here are some pictures from some of our math periods this past week.

We talked about shapes in more detail and read the book " The Shape of Things"

We loved the pictures, and enjoyed looking at the classroom with the idea that everything was shapes.

The kinder's were asked to make their own pictures from shapes, and sit down with me when completed to talk about their picture, naming and counting the shapes used.


We also talked about ten frames this week and worked on the concepts of more, less or the same. The kids played an adapted version of war, using ten frames.

Hair cut pictures!

The gym was full of energy as the principal dual honoured their pledge to shave their heads if the 900 dollars was raised for the foster children!

Great job again to all the kinder's and their parents for being involved in our bake sale and for buying and donating toys!

The kids have spent time talking about needs and wants, and know with the money raised, two kids will get more of the needs required to live a better life.

Play based learning

I recently went to a couple seminars promoting developmentally appropriate instruction In classrooms. At the Manitoba teachers learning fair the department Of education reinforced what this looks like in a kindergarten classroom: Play based learning. ( learning through play )

I'm sure to many people looking through our window it looks like all we do is play, but there is so much learning taking place!

I will also be doing a pilot project with Pearson learning where I take photos, and write comments on the program to catch kids in play based learning showing examples of curriculum outcomes being met. That's what a lot of the photo's below we're taken for. I can also send these learning stories to parents to view... So stay tuned!

Tusen Takk (. A thousand thanks in Norwegian)

I still have a little bit of of my Norwegian language skills left from my couple of years living there...
And it fit's perfectly for this occasion and the gratitude I feel for all the great kinder parents.

The kids are buzzing with excitement and were so engaged in the idea of raising Money for others who do not have all their basic needs met - they really " got" it, and it was magical to be a part of.

Thank you parents for being so forthcoming, it was a very valuable experience for the kinder's who enjoyed making their own labels for the baking, as well as deciding on costs. ( there was a couple items labeled at 900 $ :). The Minnedosa paper also stopped by and took some pictures, so watch for them next week!

The school is well on it's way to reaching its goal - thanks to you. The bake sale raised 350$. I told the kids I wold post it on the blog for them.

Next week LSIN is putting on the toy sale, which we will be visiting in per 6 on Monday for the even class and Tuesday for the odd class.

Bake Sale Friday!

Hello! Thank you to all the great parents who are supporting our foster kids bake sale. I know ow busy things are! I have 21 families donating baking:)

The kids will be so proud to say they have been a part of raising the money for others..... And also to see Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Rapsky get their heads shaved!

Of course the kinder's can buy items to.

A very special thank you to the parents who have donated baking, even if their child is not at school that day. Your gratitude is greatly appreciated.

Baking can be brought in first thing on the morning, or anytime before 10 am to the classroom.

I am at an amazing seminar in Brandon on literacy and have so many things to bring back and do with the kids next week.
