4 L Milk Jugs

We are going to be making an igloo in class with Milk jugs - if anyone has any at home we would love to use them....     the more we get the bigger our igloo!

Here is an example of what the finished product will look like!

A Wonderful Wednesday !

BLUE CLASS :Remember - Friday is hot dog day and we also get to see cheerleaders Sheppard and Rapsky!
Library Day will also be on Friday instead of Tuesday due to Mrs. Widdowson being away that day! Remember to have your books back :)

Today we had reading buddies with the grade 8 students. The grade 8's have been asking us to tell the story through the pictures first before they read it to us -  to help us understand that pictures are important clues to what is happening in the text of the book

After the book was finished,  the Kinder's had to draw a picture of their favorite part of the book, and with help from their buddy - write the title of the book, the date, and their names.

The Kinder's are really getting the hang of drawing detailed pictures of their favorite part ,  and enjoy pointing out to me who the main character is and what is happening in their picture.

We also had music today in our classroom because immunizations were going on for the older kids in the music room.   "Mrs. Music" started to sing a few Christmas carols with the kids to help them learn the words for our Christmas concert!

We added  two new centers  -  one was measuring names where the students worked with me and had to find a name that was longer, shorter and the same length as theirs.  They also had to figure out which was the shortest, and longest name in the class.
The groups that saw me today did a great job of this - especially filling out their very important "math reports"  that helped us keep track of our findings!   The remainder of the groups will get a turn on Friday.

The other center we added in was using our magnetic ten frame boards for math.  We have now started looking at the numbers 11 to 20 and are learning how to represent the numbers on our ten frames!

Mrs K. has also been forgetting her camera at home :(  As I write this It is already sitting in my school bag so I remember)  Look for more photo's soon!

Our perfect names...... and welcoming a new student

Its hard to believe that tomorrow is already Wednesday!

I want to thank all the parents for sitting down with their Kinder student and talking about how you came up with their perfect name.

During show and tell time  the past couple of days we have shared the stories from our sheets.  The students were so proud of their names and hearing why their names are perfect for them!  I really enjoyed hearing the stories as well -  and I have to agree - everyone in our classroom has a very unique and perfect name for them!

Sight words
We have started focusing or learning  some sight words  that we see and read every day at morning message.  The words we have been looking at , and talking about are = is, we, a, and have.

Welcome Nikki!
Today in the blue class we welcomed a new student!  The class was very good at showing Nikki how our  classroom is run- and at the end of the day Nikki shared some of her new friends  names -  which ended up being the whole class!  Nikki was also our student of the day today -  We hope she enjoys her book of our portraits we drew of her!

Nutrition Week
Nutrition week is going strong,  and our classes have been really talking about what we are eating during snack and lunch time!  Yesterday we had a winner in the school draw!  Keep eating healthy from all four food groups!

Picture orders
Picture orders were put in the Bear books the past couple of days.  Retakes are not ready yet -  when they are  I will send them home!

Parent volunteers :)
Also a big thank you to our parent volunteers who come in and help with some one on one work with the kids!!  It is very much appreciated!

Labelling clothing items
Reminder -  its that time of year where kids have a bunch of outdoor clothes hanging up in our lockers.  Please try to label your kinder's clothes so if I find some mitts, or ski pants left behind I can  quickly get them back to their owner:)  It seems like almost all 43 of my students have black ski pants!

Christmas donations/ volunteers
please check out the post below for information about some classroom help for our Christmas concert.  Email me if you can help out.      lkonsorada@rrsd.mb.ca

Christmas Concert etc......

The school's Christmas concert will be on December 19th.  Both of our kinder classes will be doing a performance, prior to the gr 1 - 4' s Musical.

Before I go out and buy any supplies I thought I would check with our great parents :)

Call for volunteers and donations...
1. Christmas Tree
December is coming up fast! I would like to set up a Christmas tree in our room for the Kinder's to decorate - rather than buying one does anyone have an extra Christmas tree they can let us borrow for the month?
2. Cardboard boxes
I have been looking and found the perfect Christmas concert performance for each class to do! If anyone has cardboard boxes they can supply, donate, or ask around for it would be greatly appreciated. The boxes need to be big enough for the kids to wear. We will need 22 boxes. I will call and see If I can get local grocery stores to donate some boxes.
3. Large cardboard sheets
We also need cardboard to make large Christmas tree ornaments out of. The kids will be holding these up over their faces/ bodies during the concert - to look like ornaments.
4.  Flashlights ( any size)
If anyone can borrow us one -  we need 21 in total.
5. Parents to cut cardboard
Volunteers to help cut head and arm holes in the boxes, as well as cut ornament shapes from the cardboard, with a hole for the kids face, as well as if any parents would like to come in for an afternoon and help us paint/ decorate our cardboard.

I will not give away details of our performances :)....  that will remain a SURPRISE for our concert - although kids may be practising at home a bit !!

Please email me, or send a note in your child's BEAR book if you are able to help out :)
I'm sooo  excited !

Nutrition Week November 26th to 30th

Food Group Challenge

Our school will be taking part in a "food group" challenge.  Ballots have gone home in the Kinder's bear books, with information for parents on the back.

Please pack an entry from in your kinder's lunch kit on their school day - and we will fill it out after we eat our lunch so the kids can take their ballots down to the gym before the daily draw.

This is a great activity to promote healthy eating, and allows the kids to see what they are eating and how it fits into the food groups!
In gym class the students will also be learning about the four food groups, and why it is important to have a balanced diet.  They have allready come back from gym class the last couple of days and told me what colors go with each of the food groups!!

Here are some pictures from our center time today.  We have seven center groups, and seven centers.   The kinders rotate through the centers.

Nov. 19th - 23rd N = November & Name

Welcome back to another week of Kinder!   It's been a while since we have had a full week of classes!

This week we will be looking at the letter N - looking more closely at how it is printed, its sound, and things that start with the letter N.

Morning Message

We have started reading a morning message every morning while we wait for 0' Canada.  This gives the class practise with print recognition, reading and tracking, as well as allows us a backdrop for  different Minni lessons involving writing, print and reading strategies.

As the kinder's get familiar with the format, they will be able to help me construct a shared morning message, and then move into creating their own individual message.

Special Guest
This week we will have a special guest coming into the classroom and working with Mrs. K and some students to further Mrs. K's knowledge in teaching early reading strategies.

over the next three days students will sit down with Mrs. K and Mr. Stouffer (RRSD literacy specialist) and get a Minni-lesson on beginning reading strategies with some pattern books in our classroom.

On Monday - we read the book Colours.  Students learned how to track the words one at a time with their pointer finger.  We learned that jumping from word to word with our finger helps us learn the proper spacing in written text,  rather than just sliding our finger along!

Letters vs. Words

This  week we will also be looking more into what a letter is compared to a word.  Students helped create a comparison chart during learning carpet time.

We also looked at our names - and how many letters are in our name.  We created cute snowman posters to show how many letters make up our name.

For the rest of the week,  we will be comparing our classmates names, graphing how many letters are in our names, and participating in centers revolving around our names and the letters in them.

We will also be looking  at the numbers 8 and 9 this week in our daily number booklets.

It's going to be a fun week -  and  on Thursday and Friday look for a small homework assignment  in the bear books for parents to fill out about their kinder's name!

PAC Hot Dog Day - Friday November 30th
The blue class will get hot dog order forms sent home on Tuesday for next week.  Order forms and money  must be returned to the school by next Monday  - please send them in BEAR book's if you would like to make an order.   Hot dogs are 2.00  each - with all proceeds going to the playground fundraiser.
Mr. Sheppard and Mr. Rapsky will also be decked  out  in cheerleader uniforms for the day thanks to all the funds raised from the book fair last week!

Friday - 'Movember Mustache's and " Snow Day Journals"

Today we had a fun day wearing our mustache's in support of Movember and prostate cancer.

Lots of kids bought some treats from the bake sale,  and Mrs. K gave a donation in support of her Grandpa- and the class got mustache's made by our student council!

We also read the book "Snow Day", and talked about what things we like to do in the snow.  The kids did a great job doing a Journal entry on the topic!

We also had some talks about  proper use of our classroom toys during free-choice time,  and cleaned up and found quite a few broken toys :(.  The class made a vow to each other to be more gentle, and to care for our toys - and treat them like they are our own.

I would also like to thank the generous  book donations from some of our Kinder's and their families.  I can't wait to read and share the book with the class!

Monday -  is a green class day - and library day.

Have a great weekend - and enjoy the pictures from today :)

Remembrance Day Poppies- Blue Class

Our Grade 8 buddies came down and helped us make our poppies - one for us to wear to the school service,  and one for us to give to the  Legion guests.

The Service was great -and the Kinder's participated very respectfully. We wore our poppies proudly on our hearts to the service,   and brought smiles to the Legion members faces as each of us presented one of our poppies to them.
The smiles on the legion  members faces,   and the way the Kinder's were so proud to show their respect was truly amazing - and got us a lot of compliments after the service ended :)

I apologize if anyone came home with sparkles all over them -  there is just something about glitter - and  kids!  One child said  "it makes them look magical" - and the kids bright smiling faces seeing the glitter truly  was "magical"  - not so much the mess :)

Have a great weekend everyone!

A Poppy

I wear a little poppy
As red as red can be
To show that I remember
Those who fought for me

Today the green class talked about Remembrance Day, and the meaning behind it.

We read  a book called :

The class made our own poppies out of hearts, and wore them proudly over our hearts for the afternoon!

Es- Chico -Chico Alphabet!
Today we also played an alphabet game where we all sat in a circle and passed around a bucket of letters.  Ask the Kinder's if they remember the song we sang while passing it!
When the song ended,  the person holding the bucket picked a letter,  identified it, we all practised its sound,  and sat it down on our alphabet matt.
This is a great way for the Kinder's to practise their letter recognition, as well as start to learn the letters sounds!

Today we also added about 200 pennies to our penny bag! Great work - keep the pennies coming!

Have a great weekend green class! See you Monday!  On Monday we will be visiting the Book Fair,  as well as having vision and hearing screening.

Enjoy family,  friends and fresh snow- according to the forecast :)

We create Change Campaign

Free the Children is running a campaign to raise money to go towards clean water for people in developing countries.

Coinciding with the Canadian penny going out of circulation, this is the perfect time to start collecting those pennies! . Start making change!

We have a bag in our room that the Kinder's are encouraged to bring in pennies to help fill.  One bag full of pennies can provide enough funding to allow one person clean water for life!!

Bring in all your pennies lying around for the month of November and let's change someone's life for the better !

Check out a great video about it here : Change campaign video
