Grade 8 Buddies

Both of our Kinder classes have been paired up with a grade 8 student from Mrs. Noonan - Robinsons's class.
We meet with our buddies once a six day cycle and rotate between using the computer lab, and having reading time with them.

The Kinder's are really enjoying this time - and often on our way up to music class we pass our buddies and wave and say hi, and they do the same when passing our classroom throughout the day.  The smiles on the kids faces are great to see, and the kids always are asking if today is buddy day.

In the computer lab,  our buddies help us learn how to use the computer, and help us with games and activities.

When it is reading time - our buddies read us a book, and help us create a page about our favorite part in the book.  This is valuable time for the Kinder's, because they get to hear a fluent reader, have someone model proper book handling, and also help them one on one with their comprehension.

The green class met with their buddies for reading time on Friday, and the blue class will be meeting with them this Monday.
The grade 8's read us Halloween books!  Here are some pictures of the green classes buddy time!

Skeleton Hiccups

On Friday,  the green class read a book called "Skeleton Hiccups".  It's an adorable story about a skeleton who tries everything to get rid of his hiccups.   From standing on his head, to holding his breath...  nothing worked until...

The Kinder's all remembered times when someone they know had hiccups and had all sorts of stories to tell about how they , or someone they know attempted to be rid of the "Hic Hic".

We did a journal entry on what we would tell skeleton to do to get rid of his hiccups!  There was some very creative ideas!
The blue class will be reading, writing and creating "Skeleton Hiccups" on Monday !

All  of the students skeletons are displayed on the bulletin board outside our room - come and check them out and ask your child about the book, and what they recommended Skeleton to try in their journal writing!

5 Little Pumpkins

Wednesday and Thursday we will be doing art work based on our poem - 5 Little Pumpkins.

This afternoon the kinders completed their craft - which I will start displaying tomorrow on the classroom walls.

While students were doing crafts the  center groups were called to another table to design their pumpkin.   This morning they had to "democratically" decide amongst their groups what type of face they wanted on their pumpkins.

There was lots of "ewwww" and "that's disgusting" as they were cleaning out the seeds and pumpkin guck!  And of course there were a few "  This is awesome" aswell .

The remaining three groups who did not get their turn today - will do theirs during center time on Friday.  Pictures will be posted once the other class has their turn!  ( camera is finally charged)

We also had a lice presentation today by a public health nurse from the hospital.  After we got over the initial fear of how big the bugs were, and that no - they are not as big as they are on the screen in real life...     the kids were able to relay back some important things that they learned.
-  we shouldn' t share hats, brushes, hair elastics with others
- lice prefer clean hair - so if you do get lice it's not because you are dirty
- If we have lice we need to wash with a special shampoo
- and   lice can't fly :)

Halloween Party

With Halloween coming  up shortly  - and having 2 classes and 1 Halloween  I'm sure you are all wondering how it must work - especially if you are new to Kinderland - like me :)

On Tuesday October 30th - The Green class will be having their Halloween Party (odd)
On Wednesday October 31st - The Blue class will have theirs.  (even)

For both classes:
In the morning, we will be doing a fun activity with our "Bone Soup".  Please remember to bring in your items and I forgot to mention in the note -  Have them labeled with your child's name on it.    We will be making a book from this,  as well as graphing  what each child brought for the soup.

Students dress in their Halloween Costume at lunch time,  and we will have a costume parade for them at 1:00, where we visit the older kids classrooms showing off the costumes.  Parents are welcome to come and help their children get ready and dressed, and watch the parade.  We go through the pit area for parents to see us.

After the parade we will have stations set up for the kids to go through with Halloween games and activities , and a brief movie at the end of the day.

Parents have signed up to bring in treats - and I will be double checking with them.
If parents are able and willing to volunteer for the afternoon to run a station/ activity it would be greatly appreciated.   Please contact me via email or in your child's BEAR book if you would like to help.

Reminder -  picture orders are due in this Friday :)

It was a blustery day....

Well the weather outside was frightful,  but inside the Kinders were delightful :)

We had two indoor recesses today - first recess and our lunch recess.  Without a gym period today too!- Mrs. K was a little bit worried about how the "energy levels" in the classroom would be.

Luckily - the kids kept busy, motivated, and active during the indoor recesses thanks to a great website.   It's called adventure to fitness.   It keeps kids active, while taking them for an educational tour of different places and times.  The blue class today LOVED the Dinosaur episode!

I attempted to take a picture before my camera died.. but was unsuccessful...   just imagine 21 kinders,  running in spot, jumping, hopping and climbing in front of the smartboard!

Last recess they were able to go outside and some did find a puddle - rubber boots were key today :)

This morning we had computer buddies,  read a story called Pumpkin Soup (to get us ready for our bone soup next week ( check your BEAR books for  info sheet)

We also  tried out some centers:
1) Candy Corn number match
2) smartboard letter printing - letters  P, A, T
3) counting - pumpkins in the pumpkin patch
4) chalk board wet, dry, erase practise  letters P, A, T
5) Shaving cream letter draw  ( a messy favorite)
6) Book making using our fall word wall
7) Pattern making with ghosts, eyeballs, and witches

Students rotated through 4 of the centers, and will do the remaining 3 during Thursday's center time.

Reminder -  Picture packages are due back to the school by Friday.

Green class Manitoba Library Day

The class had a great time DEAR - ing !   (Drop Everything And Read)

This morning students explored books on their own for the first 10 minute session.
For the next couple,  Mrs. K read them a pumpkin book,  a book from the website "wegivebooks.org" called "Many Marvelous Monsters".   The kids thought the smart board was so cool - and can't wait to try it out on their own for center time.

For the last afternoon session Mrs. K read the Kinders some poems from her favorite poetry book from when she was little -  "Jelly Belly".   The class really enjoyed the funny poem called Jelly Belly - he sneezed and blew his house down!!!

Below are some pictures of the class during DEAR time.

This last one is a favorite from today.  During free-choice time I noticed these girls were playing school and according to them "Mrs. D" is on the left,  and "Mrs. K" is on the right.   I just had to take a picture.....   little did I know that 5 mins. later we had another character show up claiming to be Mr. Sheppard.  He is a popular character to play in dramatic play in our classroom :)

Picture Orders

The students will be bringing home their school picture proof's on Monday and Tuesday .    I hope no one minds my looking -  but I was pretty impressed with all the great smiles I saw! :)

Please look over your picture orders and return the order  and the money to me by Friday October 26th.

You are by no means obligated to order pictures - but the packages are there for you if you choose.
If you decide retakes are needed - please just inform me and the date is TBA.

Classroom photos will be given out once your orders are handed back to you in a couple of weeks.

Cheese :)
